Most design roles end at the handoff. This one ends when the thing runs. I am Gustaf Garnow, a Forward Deployed Designer in Stockholm, and this is what the title means, where it came from, and what it looked like the last time I did it.
Forward Deployed Designer
A designer embedded where the product meets its users, who designs the product, writes the code that runs, and stays with it until it works in the field.
Forward deployed is a military phrase. It means stationed where the work happens instead of back at headquarters.
It started with engineers.
Palantir built the first version of this role: the Forward Deployed Engineer, who works from the customer's site rather than the office, because the problem only shows its real shape once you are standing in it.
The design version arrived when building got fast. If a working feature takes an afternoon, the slow part is no longer construction. It is knowing what to build, and that answer lives where the users are. So the designer goes there too.

I put an AI in a field.
LINJEN is the literal version of the job. An AI operator answers a real phone booth standing in a rye field on Österlen. I did the concept, the voice, the roleplay and the code, and then I drove out and stood in the booth until it worked.
Everything hard about it was deployment, not design theory: a phone that reports OK while broken, a mobile link that drops what matters, firmware that needed the supplier and a field report to fix. None of that is visible from a desk.

What is a Forward Deployed Designer?
A designer who is embedded where the product meets its users and ships it there. They design the product, write the code that runs in production, and stay with it until it works in the field rather than handing a specification to someone else.
Where does the title come from?
It adapts Palantir's Forward Deployed Engineer, a role where engineers work from the customer's site instead of headquarters. The term is military in origin: forward deployed means stationed where the work happens. AI product companies have since started hiring the design equivalent, because when building gets fast, design becomes the bottleneck.
How is it different from a product designer?
A product designer can finish at the handoff. A forward deployed designer finishes when the thing runs. The deliverable is not a file or a specification, it is working software in the place it was built for, and the designer owns that last stretch instead of passing it on.
Does a Forward Deployed Designer write code?
Yes. Not necessarily all of it, and not necessarily the production hardening or the scaling, but enough to build the real thing rather than a picture of it. The point is that the prototype and the product are the same artifact.
Is this the same as a design engineer?
They overlap but the emphasis differs. A design engineer is defined by the craft, design plus code in one person. A forward deployed designer is defined by the position, being out where the product is used, close to the people who use it, shipping under real conditions. Most forward deployed designers are design engineers. Not all design engineers are deployed.
What kind of company hires one?
So far mostly AI product companies, where a model can be integrated in days and the slow part becomes deciding what it should feel like. The pattern also fits anything with a physical installation, a field deployment, or a customer whose constraints only reveal themselves on site.
